National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine
The National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine is a fascinating place to visit. It was founded in Kiev in 1973. Ukraine's National Museum of Medicine showcases medicines and medical treatments that were developed in Ukraine from historical times up to our day.
This magnificent Ukrainian museum was awarded the noble prize of Ukraine in 1983. The National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine is one of the largest medical museums, not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe. This Museum utilizes the building of the former Anatomical Theatre of the Kyiv University, constructed in 1853 by A. Beretti. The building is an architectural monument of the 19th century. Professor O. A. Grando, Doctor of Science in Medicine was the founder of The National Museum of Medicine.
The Museum of Medical Science presents many pieces of Ukrainian fine arts concerning medicine. Most interesting is the scientific materials and instruments on display, which you will be able to view. Medical marvels through the years have been documented. These original documents are available for your viewing pleasure. The Museum of medicine also portrays figures of the well-known scientists and physicians dedicated to the most outstanding events in Ukrainian medicine.
Interesting displays, which date from as early as the 18th and 19th century, are available for your perusal at the historical museum, including the interior of a chemist's shop from the late 18th century. Further, from the early 19th century the museum exhibits historical relics, ancient medical instruments and medical plants which were used in traditional medicine. Then, from the 10th and 11th century, the ancient Old Russian bath-house which was not only used for hygienic purposes but also for healing is also on display. You will also see the history of surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology, pathology and bacteriology - especially for those of you interested in these fascinating fields.
The fifth and sixth halls of the National Medical Museum of Ukraine display features of public health and development of medical science in the 20th Century. These halls feature the famine in Ukraine which took place in the years 1932-1933. An historical event which touched the lives of millions around the world - the Chernobyl tragedy - is also represented here.
Soon after Ukrainian independence the museum came to be known on an international level. For the first time in history, the museum's collections were exhibited in other famous museums such as Canada, France, Denmark and Croatia. Overall the National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine has archives that are valuable to the history of Ukrainian medicine, most of which you can study at your leisure when visiting this special museum.
